Daniel C. Porth, CPA
Dan Porth was born in Portland, Oregon and has lived in Oregon all his life. He is a 1981 graduate of Oregon State University with a bachelor’s of science in accounting. He began his career in public accounting working first for a local firm in Eugene, and then in several Portland area firms. Dan worked with Marv for two years before becoming a partner in 1991.
Dan’s primary areas of practice are much broader than just traditional accounting and auditing. He specializes in serving family-owned businesses, which includes services such as succession planning and estate planning, along with more traditional services such as income tax preparation for businesses and individuals. Dan’s area of expertise and interest include working with the solid waste industry, real estate investors, and anyone in need of advanced financial planning. Dan’s professional affiliations include memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants. In the local community, he is a member of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the Optimist Club of Salem. He currently serves on a variety of committees for non-profit organizations.
Dan spends his free time with his wife, Margaret, and son, Lane. They enjoy basketball, baseball, football, soccer, biking, and camping.
Mike Unrein, CPA
In January 2010, Mike Unrein becomes a partner with the firm, forming Mackey Porth & Unrein.
Mike holds dual bachelor’s degrees in business administration and education from Oregon State University. Before partnering with Mackey and Porth, he worked for Moss Adams CPAs as well as Price Waterhouse.
While Mike jokes that he pursed accounting because being 6’4” did not automatically qualify him for the NBA, he found that he truly enjoys working with clients and solving their accounting problems. His areas of expertise include general taxes and business consulting.
Mike is a member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants, as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a member and past president of Salem’s LeTip, a business referral group. He serves as a board member and as vice-president with the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest. He is also a youth basketball coach.
An Oregon native, Mike has been married to his wife Katy for 22 years. They have 3 boys: Jacob, Jonathan, and Jeffrey. When he isn’t following his teenagers around to their events, he’s golfing or working on his year-round commitment to the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest.
Founder
Marvis R. Mackey, CPA
In 1979, “Marv” Mackey founded what is today Mackey Porth & Unrein.
Marv was born in Tyler, Texas and raised in the east Texas area. He earned his bachelor’s of business administration in accounting from East Texas University in 1967. After serving two years in the US Army, including a year in Turkey, Marv began his public accounting career with KPMG Peat Marwick in Odessa, Texas, gaining a variety of audit and tax experience in his five years with this international firm. In 1976, he moved to Salem and opened his own public accounting firm.
While Marv retired from the daily operations of Mackey Porth & Unrein in 2010, he still serves in an advisory role. For 40 years, Marv provided his clients with extensive tax, business, and personal planning experience. His industry expertise encompassed manufacturing, construction, and family-owned businesses. Marv also provided litigation support to his clients and attorneys needing expert testimony or other support.
Marv is a member, as well as past president and former board member, of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. He has served on many boards and commissions, including SEDCOR and as a member of the Salem City Council for four years. His professional affiliations include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Marv has two grown children and two grandchildren. He enjoys fishing, golfing, and skiing.
Team Members
Firm Administrator Vicki Seed joined Mackey Porth & Unrein in 2000. She has over 25 years of bookkeeping and office administration experience. Vicki deeply enjoys the people she works with, saying they are like family. She also enjoys reading, singing, being outdoors and spending time with her two grown daughters.
Kit Smithson has been part of the Mackey Porth & Unrein team since 1998. As a paraprofessional/bookkeeper, Kit enjoys working directly with clients, especially in training and assisting them with computer programs such as QuickBooks. When not at work, she enjoys reading, spending time in her garden, and crafting porcelain figurines. She has four grown children, three grandchildren, and a menagerie of animals including chickens, sheep, pigs, ducks, rabbits and two emus that produce baby emus annually.
Staff Accountant Allen D. Westbrook has been with Mackey Porth & Unrein since 2006. He has over twenty years of experience as a certified public accountant, including tax preparation for individuals and businesses; auditing non-profits, businesses, and local governments; compliance examinations for government grants and loans; design and implementation of accounting control systems; and small business management.
Allen holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southern Oregon College, and he is a member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants, as well as the Greater Albany Chamber of Commerce.
He was born and raised in Oregon. He has two sons, two daughters, and a granddaughter. He enjoys many outdoor activities, including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, dirt bike riding, and touring on motorcycles.
Frankie Dhabolt, paraprofessional, has worked at Mackey Porth & Unrein since 2006. She is a graduate of Salem Business School. With eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, Frankie spends much of her free time at softball and soccer games.
Licensed Tax Consultant Lillian Louis joined the Mackey Porth & Unrein team in 2006. Lillian taught high school for 32 years while simultaneously pursing a career in tax preparation. In 2007 she retired from teaching and committed to working full-time as a tax consultant. She holds degrees from Willamette University and Oregon State University. When she’s not helping clients with their taxes, she’s out golfing or rooting for the Trailblazers.
Angie Wyant joined Mackey Porth & Unrein in 2009. She is a licensed tax preparer who enjoys the intensity of tax season. An Oregon native, Angie has never wanted to live anywhere else except the Northwest. She likes reading and sewing, and she’s always game to visit any zoo.
