ABOUT MACKEY PORTH & CO.

 

Marvis R. Mackey, CPA
Marv is the firm’s managing partner and founder. With more than 35 years of experience, Marv provides his clients with extensive tax, business, and personal planning experience. His industry expertise includes manufacturing, construction, and family-owned businesses. Marv also provides litigation support to his clients and attorneys needing expert testimony or other support.

Marv was born in Tyler, Texas and raised in the east Texas area. He earned his bachelor’s of Business Administration in Accounting from East Texas University in 1967. After serving two years in the US Army, including a year in Turkey, Marv began his public accounting career with KPMG Peat Marwick in Odessa, Texas, gaining a variety of audit and tax experience in his five years with this international firm. In 1976, he moved to Salem, and in April 1979, he founded Mackey Porth & Co.

An active part of the community, Marv is a member, as well as past president and former board member, of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. He has served on many boards and commissions, including SEDCOR and as a member of the Salem City Council for four years. His professional affiliations include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Marv has two grown children and two grandchildren. When not working, he enjoys fishing, golfing, and skiing.


 

Daniel C. Porth, CPA
Dan was born in Portland, Oregon and has lived in Oregon all his life. He is a 1981 graduate of Oregon State University with a bachelor’s of science in Accounting. He began his career in public accounting working first for a local firm in Eugene, and then in several Portland area firms. Dan joined Mackey Porth & Co. in 1989 and became a partner in 1991.

Dan’s primary areas of practice are much broader than just traditional accounting and auditing. He specializes in serving family-owned businesses, which includes services such as succession planning and estate planning, along with more traditional services such as income tax preparation for businesses and individuals. Dan's area of expertise and interest include working with the solid waste industry, real estate investors, and anyone with the need for advanced financial planning. Dan’s professional affiliations include memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants. In the local community, he is a member of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the Optimist Club of Salem. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Salem Leadership Foundation, as well as a variety of committees of other organizations.

Dan spends his free time with his wife, Margaret, and son, Lane. They enjoy basketball, baseball, football, soccer, biking, and camping.


 

TEAM MEMBERS
Before joining Mackey Porth & Co. in 2003 as our Receptionist, Karen Byerley was an office manager/bookkeeper for a family business and worked 12 years as a fitness trainer. A favorite aspect of her job is meeting and helping clients. When not at work, Karen spends time—preferably outdoors—with her husband, daughters, two cats, and two dogs.

Vicki Seed, Firm Administrator, brings over 25 years of bookkeeping experience to the Mackey Porth & Co. team. She deeply enjoys the people she works with, saying they are like family. Vicki has two daughters and enjoys spending time with them. She also enjoys reading, singing, and being outdoors.

Kit Smithson has been part of the Mackey Porth & Co. team since 1998. As our Paraprofessional/Bookkeeper, Kit enjoys working directly with clients, especially in training and assisting them with computer programs such as QuickBooks. When not at work, she enjoys reading, spending time outdoors, and crafting porcelain figurines. She has four grown children, one grandchild, 2 cats, and one old dog.
